Minutes for October 7, 2010
Regular Meeting
The meeting of Prunedale Unit 593 was called to order by President Marilyn Yaqub at 7:10 pm on October 7, 2010 in the Lower Hall. Opening rituals were performed. All officers were present except Chaplain, Historian and Past President. We had a quorum. The minutes from the September 2010 meeting were read and placed on filed. The Treasurer’s report was read and placed on file.
Our meeting started off with a presentation by our North Monterey County Girl Stater, Faith DeAmarelo.
Reports:
President: Marilyn announced that we will be having another swap meet at the post on November 20th. We made $43 at the previous swap meet. She also talked about the bake sale at the dinner and during the swap meet. She would like to continue to have them during our dinners.
1st Vice: Karen reported that we had 78 paid up members which leaves us at 55%. We had four new members to vote on: Annabell Storms, Poppy Anacleydo, Anita Russel, and Amber Palmer. There was a motion by Stefanie to accept all the new members. It was seconded by Karen. Motion was carried. Liz mentioned that we were challenged by Unit 591 at the last district meeting. We also mentioned having an Initiation Ceremony for all our new members.
2nd Vice: Stefanie reported that poppies had been ordered.
Education: Stefanie discussed the Castroville Elementary 5th Graders Science Camp. The need $5000 to send all the 5th graders to science camp this year. Stefanie made a motion to donate $200 to Castroville Fifth Grade Science Camp. Seconded by Renee. Motion Carried.
Girls State: Jennie reported that the girls state application was sent in.
Leadership: Renee reported that we the district is having a Leadership Workshop that will start with the next district meeting on November 21st in Watsonville.
Legislative: Renee requested to receive a Legion dispatch so she can keep up on the American Legion Legislative Efforts. The dispatch costs $15 per year for a subscription. Renee made a motion to have the unit legislative chairman receive a copy of the dispatch. Seconded by Liz. Motion Carried
New/Unfinished Business:
Liz brought in a letter we reiceved from a man who received help from Defenders of Freedom. We made a $250 donation and it went towards helping him. He wanted to thank us for our help. We also discussed adopting him and his kids for the Christmas season and inviting them to the kids party.
Liz presented the awards we received at Convention:
Karen mentioned that on October 23rd we will be having a Candle Light Party at the post. Half the proceeds will go to the Spinal Cord ward at Palo Alto. It will start at 3:00 PM. There will also be a band in the evening.
Ellen presented a picture of the girl who won at the 4H competition at the Santa Cruz County Fair. She also thanked us for our donation.
Mary Rashe is having a baby shower for her future grandson on October 9th from 2-4 pm.
Fishing Derby was another success. Liz will be making a certificate of appreciation for Unit 589 for the assistance.
Victoria, Karen, Marilyn, and Renee went to J and S Supply for Ride to Recovery. Marilyn and Renee also helped at the Carmel Mission Inn.
Our Kids Halloween Party will be on October 30th from 1-3. We will decorate the hall for Halloween on October 24th.
Jenny brought up her challenge coin, which she re-named to Auxiliary Medallion. We should be able to present them outside of district meetings and to other units. We can make them through Department without and issues with copyright. We should be able to make about $600 in profit for the first set of 100 medallions if we sell them for $10 per medallion. Jenny made a motion to purchase 100 medallions and earmark the profit from the medallions to Girls State. Seconded by Karen. Motion Carried.
Veterans Day Ceremony will be on November 11th at Veterans Hill at 11:00 am
District Presentation:
Connie stated by telling us that the districts name was Connie’s Gypsies. The department’s focus this year is wounded warriors and Brain Trauma. The National President is focusing on Ride to Recovery and Wounded Warrior.
Renee discussed membership awards including the Silver Brigade.
Liz discussed the poppy program and the major symbolism of the poppy.
Connie then discussed the Six major programs of the American Legion Auxiliary
Legislative- Influence State Officials as an organization and Support the Legion to Co-Sponsor bills
Americanism- Promote and Recognize the unit, Youth Groups, Schools, Adult Groups, and the Community. Promote patriotic education.
Children and Youth- Preserve the family home and Temporary Financial Assistance
Education- get a veteran in the classroom to talk to the children. The district has 2 $300 scholarships this year.
VA&R- Needs Donations
Ruby thanked the unit and the Sons for their donations and time at Moss Landing and Carmel. Next year for Ride to Recovery we need to focus on lots of meat and carbs. We also need to work on refreshments in Seaside.
Dinner will be on October 22nd and will be Shnitzel.
Breakfast will be October 24th and is going to be omelets.
The next meeting will be held in the Lower Hall on Thursday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
